Analysis of the communication channel and channel load kicked-off

For coordinating cooperative driving maneuvers, commuication between the vehicles is necessary. The exchange of object data and realization of negotiation protocols is not considered in current definitions of V2X messages (i.e. messages that are exchanged between vehicles and surrounding infrastructures, respectively). For defining new and adapting existing V2X message formats and protocols, suggestions have been published for, amongst others, ITS G5 from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). In IMAGinE, specific, existing message formats such as, for instance, the "Cooperative-Awareness-Message" (CAM), which contains amongst others information about the own vehicle position and movement state, should be used as well as new message formats, such as the "Maneuver-Coordination-Message" (MCM) for coordinating cooperative driving maneuvers, should be specified and extended.

The used and newly developed V2X messages will require additional capacities in both transmission channels, ITS G5 and mobile communication, provided for V2X communication. Thus, the impact of these new message formats on the channel load needs to be clarified. Moreover, potential latencies between generating and receiving a message as well as update rates should be examined, which in turn serves as input parameter for the analysis of the channel load. This is an important aspect since the coordination of driving maneuvers between vehicles has to work properly even at high velocities.

In order to investigate aforementioned issues, a corresponding subcontract has been advertised and assigned to the Institute of Operating Systems and Computer Networks at the Technical University of Braunschweig headed by Prof. Lars Wolf. The envisaged activities have been kicked-off on March 2nd, 2021.
