HMI concepts expanded to include uncertainty conditions

The aim of the IMAGinE work package WP3.5 "Driving simulation and driver behavior" was to expand the human-machine interaction concepts (HMI) to include real-life "uncertainty conditions" and to further develop cooperation-relevant aspects of driver intention recognition.

Based on the studies carried out in work package WP2.4 "HMI principals", four termination criteria were initially defined for the IMAGinE functions examined in WP3.5. HMI concepts have been developed for the IMAGinE functions F1 "Cooperative merging on highways", F3 "Cooperative overtaking on rural roads", F5 "Cooperative turning at junctions" and F6 "Cooperative overtaking by heavy-goods vehicles on motorways" (IMAGinE functions). Different aspects were examined from function to function: the need to confirm the cooperation request for assisted driving, the information content in icon and text representations, the reaction of drivers in the event of an incident when overtaking, threading or turning left, the effects of false alarms in the overtaking warning function, the effects on the willingness to take risks and trust in the system as well as the effects of the depth of explanation in abort situations in manual and automated driving on the acceptance of the system.

The following studies were carried out on individual functions: System limits of functions F1 and F5, function abort for F1 and F5, errors in an overtaking warning system (F3), uncertainty conditions for function F6, HMI for partially automated overtaking maneuvers with function F6, an HMI evaluation for functions F1 and F3 as well as a study on the detection of willingness to cooperate using function F1.

The individual studies were summarized in deliverable D3.5 "HMI studies and extended interaction concept for uncertainty conditions". Individual findings have already been published in conference proccedings and specialist journals and are shown in the "publications" section as core innovation "HMI" (publications).
